Outlook 2026 – Key Developments for the Coming Year

17. October 2025 | Company Infos

Update

As already announced in October 2025, there will be extensive construction and closure measures on the German rail network  in 2026. These lead to large-scale diversion traffic on the corridors we serve.

Due to the resulting diversion kilometres, longer transit times, additional train driver changes as well as reduced train lengths and train weights on the diversion routes, a proportinate passing on of costs is unfortunately unavoidable.

Diversion surcharge from 6th February 2026

For all afffected transports, we will charge a diversion surcharge of EUR 24,00 per TEU from the train departure date 06.02.2026 to 10.07.2026.

This surcharge applies to traffic affected by the diversions in the Bavarian area due to the total closure there.

Outlook – further closure measures from July 2026

Please note that the current construction phase in July does not mean the end of the restrictions. From 10th July 2026, the next total closure will follow in the Obertraubling – Passau area. It can therefore be assumed that the diversion situation will intensify significantly again in the further course of the year.

For our connections Enns/Vienna/Graz <-> North Sea ports, trains will be diverted via Salzburg during this period.

We will inform you separately in good time about the continuation or adjustment of the diversion surcharge from 10.07.2026.

Despite the massive infrastructure measures, we continue to work flat out to ensure a stable system and predictable tranports for you. At the same time, it is important to us to present the additional costs opently and comprehensibly.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the entire Roland Sales team at any time.

17.10.2025

The year 2026 will once again bring far-reaching changes for rail freight transport. In addition to general cost increases, the large-scale construction sites in the German rail network and regulatory framework conditions are shaping our industriy.

We would like to give you an overview of the most important developments and at the same time ensure that, despite all the challenges, we will continue to maintain a stable and reliable transport system for you.

Important cost factors in 2026

Track access prices

Rising track and infrastructure charges in Germany are also expected for 2026. How high the actual adjustment will be is currently still open – a decision is expected by the end of the year.

Diversion traffic, construction sites and total closures

Particularly drastic are the planned major construction sites in the German rail network, which directly affect our routes to/from Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven – Enns, Vienna and Graz:

  • Total closure Nuremburg – Regensburg: 6th February to 10th July 2026
  • Restrictions Hanover – Hamburg: 1st May to 10th July 2026
  • Total closure Obertraubling – Passau: 10th July to 11th December 2026

The diversions lead to longer transit times, additional route kilometer, further train driver changes (in some cases three instead of two) as well as reduced train lengths and Train tonnages. In concrete terms, there is an average of one wagon per train (equivalent to 4 TEU), the resulting additional costs incurred will be shown transparently from February 2026 onwards via a separate surcharge.

Energy

The development of energy costs also remains a factor of uncertainty. Different pricing mechanisms in the individual countries as well as volatile sport market prices continue to fluctuate considerably.

Subsidies (TraFöG in Germany, Combined Funding in Austria)

The decision on the continuation of these subsidiesis expected by December 2025. If there is still some uncertainty,, but the current signals from politics indicate that the subsidies will not be cancelled. The situation now appears significantly less critical than originally assumed. Should subsidies be reduced or contrary to expectations, are even suspended, we also show the addtitional costs incurred.

We know that these framework conditions create additional planning uncertainty for our customers. Therefore, we have been working intensively for over seven months on solutions to best mitigate the impact of the construction work, diversions and cost increases.

Despite the massive construction and infrastructure measures, as well as possible cost increases, we send a positive signal: we continue to offer you a stable system, transparent Pricing and reliable transport solutions.

In times that are characterized by construction projects, rising costs and uncertainties, a reliable partner is crucial – and that is exactly what we at Roland Spedition want to remain for you.

We thank you for your trust and look forward to supporting you reliably in 2026 with your transports. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the entire Roland Sales team.
