Game Changer: Digital Automatic Coupling

31. March 2022 | Blog

The Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) is considered an important milestone for climate-friendly rail freight transport despite increasing transport volumes.

To achieve the climate targets, it is necessary to shift transportation of goods from road to rail and to make rail freight transport more competitive as well as more efficient. This is where the Digital Automatic Coupling comes into play. It can act as game changer and revolutionize rail freight transport.

As part of such a groundbreaking change, there are of course various aspects to consider such as:

What challenges does the transportation industry face until market maturity?
What are the advantages of using the DAC and are there any disadvantages?

Dejan Pejic, COO and Safety Officer at Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH answered these and other questions in our interview.

Cross-border use & revolution on rail

Neither there are borders for rail freight transport nor for the use of DAC. To exploit its full potential political framework conditions and common European standards are required.

To put it in a nutshell: reaching maturity phase by 2025 is ambitious, but the successful implementation of DAC will mean a digital revolution for rail freight transport.

Acknowledgments

Finally, we would like to thank our longtime partner Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH and Mr. Dejan Pejic for this interesting interview.
